The Chair Project

For todays post I want to show you my new chair which I just got back from my upholsterer. The chair was given to me by a friend and sat in the warehouse at Moving Designz over the winter while I was on the look out for the perfect fabric. I found the new fabric while we were up in Toronto in January and thought it would be perfect for the chair.

The chair before...

The chair now... The fabric background is creamy white with a blue and mocha coloured circle pattern. I turned out fantastic and I just love it! I ordered new legs which should be in sometime next week.

Should you reupholster or buy new? Ask yourself these questions.

1 - Is the piece an heirloom (handed down from a family member) does it have sentimental value
2- Is it very comfortable and you can't bear to part with it.
3- Does it have a good hardwood frame and (inners) springs and cushions.
4- Does it fit into your room very well.... (except for the fabric).
5- What is the maximum amount you want to spend for the piece(s).

A well-made frame is always a good value to reupholster. Older furniture is usually made from solid hardwood. You can usually tell by the weight of the piece and believe me this is one heavy chair! An old sound frame upholstered in a fresh new fabric can rival or be superior to any new high end piece. The key here is a good solid frame.

By now you are probably wondering about the cost of renewing that piece of furniture... typically the cost associated with reupholstery is dependant on 2 factors; the cost of the labour and the cost of new fabric. Prices for labour range from $450.00 for a chair to $900.00 for a sofa plus the cost of the yardage of fabric.

Looking forward to your comments.

Thanks for reading. Have a great weekend!
Susan

Great Transformation! The new fabric really accentuates the lines of the chair. I hope you will post pictures of the chair in its final destination.
